Autumn Lawn Care: Helping Your Grass Recover and Prepare

Now that autumn is here, it's a good time to give your lawn some extra care. After the stress of summer heat and dry conditions, grass can benefit from a few seasonal steps to help it recover and prepare for the colder months ahead.
Fertilising in autumn is particularly effective, as the soil is still warm enough for roots to absorb nutrients. Feeding your lawn at this time helps strengthen the root system, supporting healthy growth and building resilience for winter.
Scarifying is another helpful step. This process removes the layer of thatch, moss, and dead material that can accumulate on the surface. Clearing this out improves airflow and allows water and nutrients to penetrate the soil more easily, reaching the roots where they’re needed most.
Aerating the lawn, by creating small holes in the soil, also encourages deeper root growth. It improves drainage and helps air and water move through the soil more freely, which supports a stronger, more robust lawn throughout the winter.
Finally, overseeding any bare or thin areas, followed by a light top dressing, can promote new growth and improve soil structure. This helps the lawn fill out evenly and sets the stage for a healthy, green recovery in spring.
