The Benefits of Propagation

Propagation is the process by which plants reproduce, either through seeds (sexual propagation) or by using parts of the plant like stems, roots, or leaves (asexual propagation). It’s a foundational technique in growing and maintaining healthy, thriving plants.

The benefits of propagation go far beyond simply making more plants. It allows for the preservation of specific traits, such as colour, size, or disease resistance by producing exact genetic copies. This is especially useful when working with reliable or high-performing plants that you want to replicate consistently.

Propagation also makes gardening more sustainable. By multiplying plants from existing material, you reduce the need to purchase new stock and cut down on waste. It’s cost-effective and often more environmentally friendly than sourcing plants commercially.

It offers flexibility, too. You can expand a garden quickly, share favourite plants with others, or rescue declining specimens by rooting healthy cuttings.
