Hot, dry weather can take a toll on your lawn, but with a few simple steps, you can keep it healthy.

Start by watering early in the morning. This allows the water to soak in before the heat of the day causes it to evaporate. Water deeply once or twice a week, rather than lightly every day, to encourage deep root growth.

Avoid mowing your grass too short during hot weather. Let it grow a bit longer to help shade the soil and conserve moisture. Mow in the cooler parts of the day and make sure your mower blade is sharp.

During a heatwave, it’s okay for your lawn to go dormant. Grass will turn brown but will bounce back when temperatures drop. Try to limit foot traffic on the lawn to help it recover.

Don’t fertilize with high-nitrogen products during the heat. If you need to feed your lawn, wait for cooler weather or use a slow-release fertilizer.

Lastly, leave grass clippings on the lawn. They help retain moisture and provide nutrients back to the soil.
