Summer Watering Mistakes That Kill Plants

Hot weather can be tough on gardens, but many plants suffer more from incorrect watering than from the heat itself. One of the biggest mistakes is watering little and often. Quick daily watering only dampens the surface, encouraging shallow roots that dry out faster. Deep watering a few times a week is usually far more effective.

Another common problem is watering during the hottest part of the day. In strong sunshine, much of the water evaporates before it reaches the roots. Early morning or evening is the best time to water, helping plants absorb moisture properly.

Overwatering can also damage plants. Soil that stays constantly wet can lead to root rot, yellow leaves, and fungal problems. Before watering, it’s always worth checking whether the soil below the surface is still moist.

Containers and hanging baskets need extra attention during summer because they dry out much faster than garden beds, especially in full sun. Adding mulch can also help retain moisture and keep soil cooler during hot weather.

With the right watering habits, gardens can stay healthy and vibrant throughout summer, even during heatwaves.
